CyberGhost’s captured monthly route runs $12.99, with a six-month route near $6.99/month and a long-term route renewing annually around $56.94. Both providers vary pricing by route, term, currency and promotion, so treat any single figure as a snapshot rather than a fixed price.
Proton VPN’s paid tier allows 10 simultaneous direct connections; CyberGhost allows 7. Both permit installing the app on far more devices than that, the cap is on how many run at once.

A trial and a refund window are genuinely useful while you’re evaluating the product, but neither is a free tier you can keep using afterward.
If you need a Dedicated IP
This is CyberGhost’s clearest hard win. Its consumer Dedicated IP sits outside the base VPN subscription as a paid add-on, with token and account-association controls that have been independently reviewed within a bounded scope. It requires you to already hold a base plan, costs extra, and (like the rest of CyberGhost’s product) doesn’t include port forwarding.
No equivalent consumer Dedicated IP was established for Proton VPN Plus in the current evidence. Proton’s established dedicated infrastructure sits in a separate Business/Workspace product layer, not as an add-on to a personal subscription.
Worth being precise about what a Dedicated IP actually gives you: a consistent address, useful for avoiding repeated CAPTCHAs or reaching IP-allowlisted services. It doesn’t make you anonymous, and it doesn’t make your traffic unlinkable. It’s a convenience feature with independently reviewed account controls, not an anonymity guarantee.
If you need 8–10 simultaneous connections
Proton VPN’s paid tier supports 10 simultaneous direct connections. CyberGhost supports 7. Both allow installation on far more devices than that, the cap governs how many can run at once.
If your requirement is 7 or fewer simultaneous connections, this difference doesn’t resolve anything for you. It only becomes decisive at the edge, if, for instance, you’re running several devices concurrently and specifically need more than 7.
Platform workflow
Hard capability differences settle part of the decision. Platform depth settles more of it, and the pattern holds across three independent surfaces.
Linux: the gap is bigger than “both support Linux”
Proton VPN’s Linux client includes an official GUI, an official CLI, manual configuration, Secure Core, split tunneling and paid port forwarding, together, on supported native packages. Real limitations remain around specific distributions and around Snap and Flatpak packaging, but the depth on offer is substantial.
CyberGhost’s Linux support is CLI and manual OpenVPN configuration only. There’s no official GUI, and split tunneling isn’t supported.
If you want more than a terminal-only connection on Linux, Proton is the meaningfully deeper option.
macOS
Proton VPN offers split routing on macOS, but it’s limited: exclusion-only, WebKit-limited, and available only over WireGuard or Stealth. It’s the one established capability here that CyberGhost doesn’t match — CyberGhost has no split tunneling on macOS.
That’s a real advantage for Proton, not a mature one. It shouldn’t be read as parity with Proton’s own Windows implementation, which is considerably further along.
Windows
Proton VPN’s Windows client has mature include/exclude routing by app and by IP address, genuine, granular selective routing.
CyberGhost’s Windows app offers website and domain exclusions through its Smart Rules system, plus App Rules that can automate a VPN connection around a specific app. That’s useful automation, but it isn’t app-level selective routing, which CyberGhost hasn’t established on Windows.
These aren’t equivalent implementations of “split tunneling,” even though both providers offer something under that general label.
iOS and TV
Neither provider offers general app-level split tunneling on iOS or iPadOS.
CyberGhost does have an established App Split Tunnel feature on Fire TV and Fire Stick. That’s a genuine capability, specific to that platform, it doesn’t tell you anything about how CyberGhost handles routing elsewhere, where it looks different again (website and domain exclusions on Windows, for instance). Specialist architecture and evidence
Secure Core and NoSpy aren’t the same thing
Proton’s Secure Core is multihop routing through infrastructure the company describes as controlled, owned entry points. CyberGhost’s NoSpy servers are a specialist single-hop class, based at a Romanian facility the company describes as internally owned and managed.
These are different route architectures and different trust boundaries, and which one matters more depends on your own requirement or threat model. Secure Core adds a routing hop before your traffic reaches the exit server. NoSpy concentrates trust in a single facility CyberGhost says it controls directly. Neither has independent physical-facility verification behind the ownership claim — both rest partly on provider description.
If multihop routing specifically is what you’re after, only Proton offers it.
Restrictive networks
Proton VPN uses a dedicated Stealth architecture built for tunnel obfuscation. CyberGhost relies on OpenVPN over TCP/443 plus Domain Fronting on selected platforms, a different mechanism, not an equivalent obfuscation layer. TCP/443 alone isn’t obfuscation, and Domain Fronting isn’t the same thing as Stealth.
Neither provider has a demonstrated universal advantage at evading network restrictions. The tools work differently rather than one clearly outperforming the other.
Assurance
Proton VPN’s no-logs claims are backed by a recurring assessment series from Securitum, though the most recent 2026 assessment’s detailed scope remains bounded in what’s publicly available.
CyberGhost’s most recent assurance is a Deloitte report dated December 2025, assessing state as of 31 October 2025, performed under the ISAE 3000 (Revised) standard as a limited-assurance, point-in-time engagement. The current signed report is publicly downloadable.

Infrastructure
Proton VPN runs on a hybrid, shared-responsibility hosting model with full-disk encryption and its own Smart Routing layer. Its Secure Core and bare-metal infrastructure carry some independently scoped evidence.
